Is an injury from 20yrs ago wreaking havoc on your body now?
When asked if our patients have had an accident years ago, the answer is usually YES & sometimes it doesn’t even have to be a memorable life event to have caused it!
Have you ever suffered from an automobile accident, sports injury, or even spending too much time on your cell phone or computer just living your daily life? Many people come into our office with neck pain, numbness in their fingers and arms and not sure what the root cause is. Following a set of x-rays, we find that many people have an old injury or just daily strain that is pinching the nerve causing communication from our brain to our nerves/organs to be blocked.
When asked if our patients have had an accident years ago, the answer is usually YES & sometimes it doesn’t even have to be a memorable life event to have caused it!
Future effects from whiplash isn’t something we think about in the stressful time of an accident but can cause many issues later down the road. As we age, the stress on our ligaments begins to deteriorate and our nerves become pinched which leads to pain and numbness in our arms, hands, and fingers…or perhaps you don’t have that, yet slowly your organs have lost their full function and you think it’s just part of getting older…
Macro-trauma and micro-trauma are very common due to the different stresses we put our bodies through many of which look & feel like daily life due to the sedentary nature of life & work for most of us.
Macro-trauma is a major trauma injury, such as joint dislocation or a bone fracture that is caused during a direct sudden event. You will remember this event!
Most common injuries include: automobile accidents (most common), sports injuries such as gymnastics, football, wrestling, or really any sports that have physical demand & these macro-trauma injuries can wreak havoc but perhaps not be noticed for many years.
Micro-trauma is an injury resulting from repetitive stress to tissues.
The most common trauma is texting necks, working at a computer all day, studying in school, playing on gaming devices for extended periods of time…being alive in the 21st century!
3 main ligaments could be affected by injuries that happened many years ago.
- Anterior Longitudinal Ligament runs along the front of the human neck, providing stability for the vertebrae of the spine.
- Posterior Longitudinal Ligament runs along the back of the human neck and is a thicker ligament providing more protection.
- Ligamentum Flavum is another protection on the other side of the spinal cord that runs down your spine surrounding and protecting the vertebrae making sure it stays stable.
During an automobile accident, whiplash may occur and tear the ligaments causing ligament damage. If it is not recognized early after an injury, disc degeneration and arthritis can begin to form. This is called Wolff’s law.
Wolff’s law is a state that your bones will adapt based on the stress or demands placed on them. When you work your muscles, they put stress on your bones. In response, your bone tissue re-models and becomes stronger.
The more you work out and keep your body physically fit, the more “good stress” you put on your bones which allows them to become denser. Women are more prone to osteoporosis so working out and staying physically fit will help your bones to stay denser and keep your bones from degeneration. #LIVEfit
“Bad stress” can happen to the bones when an overabundance of stress is placed on one particular area causing the bone to lay down more bone to reinforce it, causing osteoporosis.
Disc degeneration arthritis is caused by trauma earlier in life, again this is potentially from a car accident, but could also be as simple as bad sleeping posture, texting with poor posture, sports injury, & many other activities of daily living that impacts the body resulting in torn ligaments affecting your spine & central nervous system.
The discs in your spine are supposed to be nice and thick. The thicker the disc, the more protected your nerves are around your spinal cord.
“Your brain controls every single function in your body.” It controls every heartbeat, it tells your lungs to breathe, and your thyroid to work properly. In order for that all to happen, a signal has to be sent from your brain, down the spinal cord & out the nerve to allow each area of your body to function the way God designed it to.
25 years after trauma from an accident could lead to a pinched nerve that is restricting communication flow throughout your body.
The middle part of your neck could have a pinched nerve causing Thyroid issues & you may not realize until later down the road due to continued restriction of the nerve over time, not allowing the signal to get from your brain to your thyroid & with less communication, there is less than optimal function.
How does Chiropractic Care help?
