High Blood Pressure Symptoms You Can Reverse Without Medication

High Blood Pressure (hypertension) affects one in three people in the US and is a dangerous condition that can lead to heart damage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 75% of the US population has high blood pressure. (1)

Our heart is a powerhouse muscle, pumping blood all throughout the body delivering oxygen to our vital organs. Strain on the artery walls or narrowing of the arteries due to persistent high blood pressure can lead to a variety of health problems that if left untreated can be life-threatening and increases your risk of heart disease or stroke.

Hypertension has a nick-name: the “silent killer.” It got this nick-name because most people with high blood pressure will not experience any symptoms. This is why it is important to regularly visit your PCP as there is not always a certain sign or symptom to alert you to the problem.

However, it is worth noting that there are some signs and symptoms to be aware of, usually occurring when blood pressure becomes a hypotensive crisis and medical intervention is absolutely necessary. Some (inconclusively related) symptoms include: Dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, heart palpitations, shortness of breath (to name a few).

Call your doctor immediately if you think you might be experiencing high blood pressure related symptoms.

Genetic factors/family history can cause hypertension, as well as:

Type 2 diabetes

Age

Obesity

Chronic Kidney Disease

Lupus

Underactive/overactive thyroid

Smoking

Lack of physical exercise

Stress

Treatment

There are a number of things you can do to lower your blood pressure naturally, even without medication.

Increase exercise

Adjust your diet/lose weight

Cut added sugars/carbs

Drink less alcohol/quit smoking

Decrease caffeine intake

Natural supplements

Manage stress

Important note: Because high blood pressure is generally a “symptomless” condition, it is important to be regularly screened especially if you are high risk. While controlling your blood pressure through natural methods might help you lower your risks, there is very much a time and place for conventional treatment such as medication.
