Back pain is one of the most common problems people experience. Almost 8 in 10 Americans at some point in their life have experienced severe back pain bringing them to a doctor’s office.

A leading cause of disability worldwide, back pain is estimated to be affecting 83 million people globally. According to one report, the chronic pain industry is estimated to reach $100 billion yearly, this includes the cost of treatment, and care as well as the missed time at work. This makes back pain an issue concerning not just individuals but also businesses indirectly the economy.

The real cause of back pain is different for different people and no ‘one’ cause has been determined so far. Similarly, no single treatment has proven to be one solution fit all. Some find relief by taking medication, others turn to yoga and stretching and some find chiropractic care to be the ultimate solution for treating their back pain. The standard treatment options to relieve back pain range from resting to physical therapy and pain relief medication to surgery.

The suggestions for treatment differ from professional to professional, however, before taking any drastic measures like having a surgery, which is not only painful but also extremely costly, it is advised to contact your chiropractor for treatment.

When it comes to chiropractic care, many see it as a last resort option and that’s a mistake many make. Chiropractic care is safe and scientifically proven to treat issues concerning back and neck, not just in adults, but also in infants.

Role of Chiropractic Care for Treating Back Pain

Chiropractors work specifically with issues related to neck, back, and spinal misalignments. To treat back pain, chiropractors manually manipulate and stabilize the surrounding muscles. Although fairly a new field, there’s scientific evidence to prove the viability and success of chiropractic care as a treatment option to treat back pain, especially lower back pain.

According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, chiropractic care has shown to successfully help alleviate pain along with improving function in people with back pain. A recent 2018 study published on the subject tested the feasibility and effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating back pain. During the study, the researchers observed 750 military personnel who had complained of back pain. Half of the participants were randomly assigned to one group who were to receive the standard care – medication, and physical therapy, while the other half received standard care plus 12 chiropractic care sessions.

After 6-weeks, those who were assigned to the second group and had received chiropractic care in addition to standard care reported greater improvements as compared to their counterparts. Those who received chiropractic care reported increased functioning and decreases pain intensity along with less pain in general, resulting in a decreased need for pain medication.

Moreover, they also reported high satisfaction with the treatment and care they had received. However, like any other treatment, there were outliers who didn’t respond positively to the treatment (10% of the participants) and reported increased stiffness in muscles and joints.

Why Consider Chiropractic Care to Treat Back Pain?

Now, the question is why you should contact chiropractor about your back pain? The answer is simple, when you have a problem in any part of your body you visit an expert and chiropractors are experts in the back and spinal issues.

Here are 4 reasons why you should be visiting your chiropractor to treat your back pain!

1. Start With the Fix First

When someone goes to see a doctor for their back pain, they are usually offered pain medication because most back pains subside on their own after a while. However, if the issue persists and is recurring then pain medication or even physical therapy won’t do much since the main problem isn’t being treated and unless you fix the problem, it will keep resurfacing leading to decreased quality of life. In case of chronic pain, relieving pain is not a long-term solution making chiropractic care your top choice for treatment.

Chiropractors are often assumed to be back doctors, and rightly so because it is one of the most common issues chiropractors treat. According to chiropractors, back problems usually present themselves due to misaligned vertebra/discs, thereby, pinching the nerves in the back or neck leading to pain, inflammation and decreased functionality.

Often times the pain goes away after a few days as the body heals itself, while other times, it can persist leading to chronic pain. In such cases, chiropractic intervention is required in the form of adjustment.

2. Seek Surgery ONLY When Nothing Else Works

In the case of back pain, most people want to try out standard care options first including medication, exercise, physical therapy, and even acupuncture. Most of the people do find relief in these treatments, however in extreme cases, many are recommended back and neck surgery which can cost you as much as $80,000.

While there is nothing wrong with any of these treatment options, chiropractic care should be your first choice. Chiropractic treatment is non-invasive and will cost you a fraction of the cost of surgery, both finically and physically. However, in some cases, surgery is the only option and should be opted if necessary.

3. Pain Will Go Away, But The Bone Will Still Be Out Of Position

Back pain is not random and if you are experiencing back pain then there is a chance that something isn’t right. Some people experience back pain because they work all day in an office and their workspace isn’t ergonomically sound leading to straining the back and neck muscles leading to pain. Others are experiencing pain due to injury or fall leading to misalignment in their spinal discs.

In both these cases, pain medication will provide relief, but it is not a long-term solution because the bone or muscles are still out of position. Until the bone (vertebra/spinal discs) isn’t in its place, the pain will continue resurfacing.

4. Chiropractic Is Often The Last Resort

Many patients visit a chiropractor after they have exhausted their options by going to medical doctors, physical therapists, acupuncturists, and even cupping therapy. They come to me after exhausting their options, and by that time they are tired and hopeless and looking for nothing short of a miracle because they are assuming that if this doesn’t work their next stop is a surgeon’s table. However, fortunately for them, most of the time, their pain and the underlying issue are treated with chiropractic care and adjustments.

The mistake many make when it comes to seeking treatment for back issues is that they keep chiropractic as the last resort option when it should have been their first stop.

A Chiropractic Visit: What To Expect

Your first chiropractic appointment isn’t much different from any other medical appointment. The practitioner or their assistant with take your in-depth medical history. This helps them understand your condition and problem better. You will be asked where and when you are experiencing the pain, its intensity as well as a list of current or previous medical treatments you have undergone.

Later on, the chiropractor conducts a physical exam and may ask you to perform various movements to determine your range of movement, muscle strength, and flexibility. You may also be asked to bring your previous reports or get new tests including blood, X-ray or MRI, if necessary. These tests help the chiropractor evaluate and determine the nature and extent of your condition and allow him/her to devise a treatment plan with certainty.

Most chiropractors, including myself here at well health and chiropractic, have a holistic approach to treating pain. We don’t just treat your pain but also the underlying issue (posture, lifestyle, diet, stress) to prevent the pain from coming back. You will be provided with a treatment plan and goals we wish to achieve during the course of the treatment. Usually, treatment begins with adjustments (also called manipulations) of the back, joints, soft tissues, followed by strengthening exercises and massage and stretching.

We also discuss lifestyle changes you may need to make to recover quickly. As mentioned before, your work environment and ergonomics play a big role in back pain, thus to treat the back pain, we also need to make a change in the areas which are contributing to the pain. We also talk about strength building and exercise because oftentimes, the first thing many of the people give up as soon as they experience back pain is physical activity. I recommend light physical activity and work out to my patients because not only is exercise good for general health, but it also helps with the pain and recovery.

Chiropractic FAQ’s

Are there risks or pain associated with the treatment? It’s the same as any procedure, however, our main goal is to alleviate your pain rather than giving you any. With that said, many of the patients describe the treatment and manipulations as uncomfortable, but never painful. You may feel pressure here and there, but there is no lasting pain. In fact, most of the patients describe feeling better instantly after the manipulation.

Expect a little soreness and pain, but it subsides within a day. Besides pain, there are no reported side effects of the manipulation. In fact, chiropractic care for back pain has been proven by research and results were favoring chiropractic care more than traditional care.

In one such study by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), usefulness and effectiveness of chiropractic care for treating lower back pain were measured and the results indicated that chiropractic adjustment is equally effective if not better than other comparable treatment options.

How long does treatment last? Chiropractic care doesn’t offer an instant fix, nor does it demand an indefinite number of visits. Most of the patients are able to complete the course of their treatment within 12-16 weeks. Some patients are asked to visit once or twice per week in the beginning and as they heal, the frequency of the visits is lessened to one visit every other week and then once in a month.

Others might be asked to visit every day or every three days depending on the severity of the problem. As the patient starts showing signs of recovery and strength, the frequency of the sessions decreases until they are completely healed.

Concluding Thoughts

Chiropractic care is exceptionally useful for treating back pain and related issues. It is an effective method to treat back pain and should be seen as a viable option. If you have been experiencing chronic back pain over the last 6-weeks then it is time to make an appointment with a chiropractor to discuss your options.

At well health and chiropractic, we have a holistic approach to treating all pain and problems and look at the problem from all angles. We care about your overall health, just as much as we care about reducing your pain. Working with us, you should know that you are in good hands, literally.
